Naughty Garden Gnome – The Activist

With his raised middle finger, The Activist gives the traditional garden gnome an irreverent new attitude. Designed by German conceptual artist Ottmar Hörl, this purple sculpture can be displayed indoors or outdoors, on its own or among a group.

The Story Behind the Gnome

In 1994, Hörl placed 1,000 blue garden gnomes throughout Seligenstadt, Germany. They appeared in unexpected places and gradually disappeared as people took them elsewhere. That movement was part of the artwork: each gnome found a new setting. The project, Rolling Change, was reissued in 2006.

Each sculpture is individually produced as part of a series. Small variations are characteristic of the process and part of the finished work.

Care

For outdoor display, choose a sheltered spot and avoid prolonged direct sunlight to help preserve the color. Some weathering may occur over time, even with the UV coating. Remove dust and dirt with a soft sponge and a mild, neutral cleaner.
