Vitra Miniature Rietveld Zig Zag Chair

Vitra Miniatures Collection.
Taking inspiration from Mart Stam’s 1926 cantilevered Stuhl design and the Rasch Brothers’ 1927 Sitzgeiststuhl, Gerrit Rietveld wanted to design a cantilevered chair from a single piece of material. The result was the Zig Zag chair designed in 1934 for the Schröder House in Utrecht, Holland, which was the precursor for Panton’s iconic plastic cantilevered chair.
The Zig Zag is made from four rectangular sections of natural hardwood, intricately dovetailed, glued and bolted together, revealing Gerrit’s expertise in cabinet making. The four rectangular sections are cut from one piece of wood and assembled in a clever vertical waterfall fashion so the grain of veneer runs continuously from the top of the seat back to the base. The seat and back are dovetailed together, and the seat and base are reinforced with two triangular wedges. Brass nuts and bolts holding the seat and the back together pass through each of the panels to produce the necessary strength for the cantilevered structure.
