Vitra Miniature Jean Prouvé Standard Chair

Vitra Miniatures Collection.
As the critical reassessment of 20th century design continues, no greater rediscovery has been made than the work of French designer Jean Prouvé. An iron smith turned industrial architect, Prouvé created 20 innovative furniture pieces during his life time, one of his most recognized icons of modern design is the Standard Chair. In 2001, Vitra began to collaborate with Prouvé’s family to re-introduce his furniture designs, the Standard Chair is a high quality reproduction of Jean Prouvé’s original design from 1930. This mid-century inspired chair is most well known for its aeronautic style rear legs. The Standard Chair uses the lacquered tubular and sheet steelframe as its main structure. The forces of resistance are concentrated in the centers of two hollow fin-shaped spines that serve as the rear legs and supports for the back of the chair. Jean Prouvé found that these spines were able to disperse stress uniformly through the legs and the back, to which he attached a frame for the seat and the front legs. The main seat and back are made from natural oak plywood.
