Vitra Miniature Jalk GJ Laminated Chair

Vitra Miniatures Collection.
Miniature scale model of Grete Jalk's GJ Laminated Chair.
After studying philosophy at Copenhagen University and training as a cabinetmaker in the early 1940's, Grete Jalk (1920-2006) studied furniture design at the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, and Industrial Design and the Royal Danish Academy of Arts. In 1963 Jalk made an international name for herself by winning first prize in the British Daily Mail International Furniture competition with her moulded plywood ‘laminated’ chair.

With the Laminated Chair, Jalk continued in the footsteps of Charles and Ray Eames by exploring the structural and aesthetic potential of plywood.

The chair, for which Jalk also created a companion side table, was manufactured by cabinetmaker Poul Jeppesen. Owing to the complexity of the chair's design - two pieces of similarly shaped plywood moulded to near their limits - only around 300 chairs were originally produced. Only a few remain in existence today, the teak being particularly sought after.
